Madam Mau Mau

The infant Mau Mau was found abandoned on the doorstep of the Windmill Theatre, Soho.  Cursory examination of the child revealed the reason for its rejection.  Displaying the characteristics of both male and female, Mau Mau presented something of a conundrum.  Order within the Windmill depended on maintaining clear distinctions between the sexes, segregating the "us" of the female performers from the "them" of their predominantly male audience.  As such, Mau Mau's peculiarities threatened backstage harmony.  The performers responded by enlisting the child into their ranks and raising it as female.

But, nature will out and, reaching the age of majority, the foundling left the warm sorority of the Windmill for a world where the weird was welcomed.  Billed as "The Enigma", Madam Mau Mau travelled the world as a sideshow spectacle, free at last to discard all deception.  However, the reward for this honesty was the hostility, ridicule and incomprehension of the audience.  On some nights, this seemed too high a price to pay.

Whilst browsing through the menswear section of Galeries Lafayette one mild summer afternoon, Mau Mau encountered the beautiful, bloodsucking cousins, Demian and Séverin.  Recognising kindred spirits, the trio began to create a vision of a society in which they could feel at home, a society in which uniqueness is a virtue, a society in which the usual rules don't apply; the NachtZirkus.

The society soon established its own gravitational field and drew to it all those who, by virtue of a quirk of birth, fate or inclination, were exiled from normality.  The Zirkus grew and keeps growing, forming a nexus of existential uncertainty in a world that believes it knows what it is doing.  A world in which there exist no dichotomies, no black and white, but instead a kaleidoscope of dazzling colours bewildering and disorientating for most, but unimaginably rich for some.
